What are ligaments?
Ligaments attach your bones at the joints, and keeps those bones together in a strong, flexible bond. You need them at their best to take advantage of everything that our world has to offer. Ligaments are clearly strong enough to keep you together, but they can be delicate when you’re active.
How do you tear them?
Accidents are the most common causes of torn ligaments. These include car accidents, exercise accidents, and simple accidents like falling awkwardly in a high-heeled shoe. When you’ve torn a ligament, no matter which joint it holds, you’re going to feel pain or discomfort.
If you feel pain or discomfort in your joint and notice swelling, pain to the touch, or bruising, you may have a torn ligament. At iMed Regeneration Center, Dr. Keller asks you about your pain and then will run tests to confirm your injury.
Nonsurgical options for torn ligaments
During your first appointment at iMed Regeneration Center, Dr. Keller evaluates and tests you. After your diagnosis, Dr. Keller works with you to establish an effective treatment plan for your torn ligaments. Your therapy may include:
- Rest and ice
- Compression packs
- Weight loss
- Physical therapy
- Chiropractic care
These are only some treatment options. Dr. Keller may discover that you have an injury severe enough that you need surgery. If this is the case, Dr. Keller will discuss next steps with you.
Preventing torn ligaments
The easiest way to avoid joint injuries is to prevent them. Do this with a thorough session of stretch-centric warmup exercises before starting a physically strenuous activity. As you build on your exercise routine over time, pay attention to how your body feels. Be kind to your feet with comfortable shoes, and make sure to stretch again when you’ve finished your session.
What to do if you tear a ligament
If you think that you may have torn a ligament, try not to panic. Wrap your joint snugly, take some anti-inflammatory medicine, and elevate your joint to quell your inflammation. If you’re in pain the following day, give us a call at 719-286-3116, or schedule an online appointment.
